The umbilical cord tissue itself contains mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) — a different cell type from those found in cord blood.
MSCs can differentiate into cartilage, bone, muscle and fat cells, and play a role in regulating inflammation. That combination is why MSCs are the subject of extensive regenerative medicine research worldwide.
Storing both cord blood and cord tissue means preserving two distinct cell types, which broadens the range of possibilities available in future.
