NIPT is a screening test that needs only a sample of the mother’s blood. Nothing is inserted into the womb, so there is no risk of miscarriage.
It analyses fragments of the baby’s DNA circulating in the mother’s bloodstream to assess the risk of certain chromosomal conditions, including Down syndrome (trisomy 21).
One thing to be clear about: NIPT is a screening test, not a diagnosis. If a result comes back high-risk, your doctor may recommend a confirmatory test.
