Some inherited metabolic disorders show no symptoms at all at birth, but can cause permanent damage within months if left untreated.
Metabolic screening takes a small blood sample from the baby’s heel and tests for the risk of these conditions.
Most of these disorders are manageable with dietary control or medication — on one condition: that they are found in time.
কিছু জন্মগত বিপাকীয় রোগ আছে যেগুলোর লক্ষণ জন্মের সময় একদমই দেখা যায় না, কিন্তু চিকিৎসা না হলে কয়েক মাসের মধ্যেই স্থায়ী ক্ষতি করতে পারে।
মেটাবলিক স্ক্রিনিংয়ে শিশুর গোড়ালি থেকে সামান্য রক্তের নমুনা নিয়ে এ ধরনের রোগগুলোর ঝুঁকি পরীক্ষা করা হয়।
এই রোগগুলোর অধিকাংশই খাদ্য নিয়ন্ত্রণ বা ওষুধ দিয়ে নিয়ন্ত্রণযোগ্য — শর্ত একটাই, সময়মতো ধরা পড়তে হবে।
